Gift Opens New Road to Children with Disabilities

POMPANO BEACH FL (01-7-08) – Learning to ride a bike is a cherished memory and a milestone for many of us, and thanks to the Neptune Society it's a moment many local children with disabilities will also now experience.

The Neptune Society has donated a specially- developed $5000 bicycle to Broward Children's Center, a Pompano Beach-based nonprofit providing medical, therapeutic and residential services to more than 1000 children with special needs.

The bike will not only be help children with special needs to learn to ride a bike, but also provide valuable occupational and physical therapy benefits. The Freedom Concepts bike is designed for children challenged with disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, Downs Syndrome, Head Injury, and Muscular Dystrophy.

Special low-gear ratios, stability design, and adjustable buckles make the bike a perfect fit for the children with disabilities Broward Children's Center serves. Center CEO Marjorie Evans said the bike was an invaluable tool to help children with special needs enjoy the freedom and independence riding a bike offers while receiving important medical treatment.

"The coordination, balance, and muscle strengthening benefits these children receive while on the bike is critical to their wellbeing and offers a fun way to receive what is often intensive and painful treatment," Evans said. "The Neptune Society's gift will be a lasting investment in the future and independence of some of the most fragile in the nation and for that we are truly grateful."
