New Student Organization Flags Broward Children’s Center for their Support |
POMPANO BEACH FL (4.06.07) – A new charitable initiative by Florida International University students has begun investing in the futures of at-risk communities across the world, including the medically fragile children cared for at Broward Children’s Center.
The new organization called Flags is the brainchild of students at the Honors College of FIU who wanted to foster a greater sense of solidarity between diverse communities in need around the world. To do this Flags members raise funds to provide immediate support to targeted communities in an effort to demonstrate that the time and energy of even a few young people can positively impact the lives of those in need.
The newly created student organization chose Broward Children’s Center as one of two priority organizations to be recipients of its first fundraising efforts. Flags became connected with Broward Children’s Center through its President, Maria Alejandra Luque who visits the Center each week to spend time with residents at its sub-acute facility.
“During my weekly visits I quickly got to know the amazing children and young people who call the Center home and the affectionate and professional staff who serve them,” Luque said. Once I shared their story my Flags colleagues didn’t think twice about making the Center a beneficiary.”
Luque went on to say that the Flags organization is committed to ensuring important community providers, such as Broward Children’s Center receive the necessary assistance required to continue with their mission.
“The support of civic-minded young people like the members of Flag is so important to the vitality of our Center and bodes well for our community as a whole,” said Center CEO Marge Evans. “We’re very thankful to have Flags support which will fund critical educational and medical services for the infants, children and young adults we serve.”
For more than 35 years, Broward Children’s Center has been providing medical, educational, and advocacy services to infants, children, and young adults with special needs.
