POMPANO BEACH FL – Writer Buddy Bryan, whose disability makes it impossible for him to move or breath on his own, has written a book about how he has dealt with life’s trials and the spirituality that inspires him.
The 25-year-old Pompano Beach resident has Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a condition that attacks the nerves and muscle cells that control voluntary muscle movement. Bryan wrote What Lies Behind His Eyes with the aid of voice recognition software in an attempt to share the lessons he has learnt dealing with hardship, to advocate for those with disabilities, and help others confronted with life’s challenges.
“I believe this book is a great example of what physically disabled people are able to do,” said Bryan. “I hope that the book along with my website will encourage others with similar disabilities to share their stories so that more people can learn that we are no different from others.”
Bryan has been an outspoken advocate for those with disabilities and has spoken to legislators in both houses of the Florida legislature. Bryan also runs his own freelance graphic/ web design consultancy, and was South Florida’s first ventilator-assisted public school student to graduate high school. Bryan has lived at Broward Children’s Center since age six, transitioning from the Center’s sub-acute pediatric facility to its one-of-a-kind group home for cognitively intact young adults.
“My dream in life is that one day individuals on ventilators and in wheelchairs will be able to own a home, work, and live a normal independent life like anybody else, and that will happen with suitable medical assistance from the State,” he said. “I could let my disability hold me back, but I choose to make a difference in the world and I want people to understand that those with disabilities have the same emotions and needs as anybody else.”
