POMPANO BEACH FL (5-11-06) – A new partnership between Broward Children’s Center and the American Institute of Massage has brought together overworked caregivers for a spa experience that for a few hours places the focus on their needs.
The event, held at the American Institute of Massage in Pompano Beach, provided pedicures, mini facials, manicures, and massages to caregivers of children served by the Center’s respite program. The program places professional caregivers in client homes or at a Center facility when families need a break or have a commitment outside the home.
“Parents and caregivers of children with special needs often put themselves at the bottom of a very long list when it comes to taking care of their own needs,” said Broward Children’s Center’s Respite Director, Linda Sachs, LCSW. “The Evening of Luxury provides an important break from the stresses of caring for a child with these needs.”
According to Sachs, families of children with special needs face increased expenses and work loads that can impact the health and harmony of those families and greatly increase the chances of divorce and financial hardship.
“Most of the people that attended the event don’t have the time or the disposable income to treat themselves to these luxuries. They typically spend every spare cent and every spare moment on their child’s needs,” said Sachs.
The event provided free services and light refreshments to all participants so that parents can relax and mingle. The American Institute of Massage also provided participants with discount coupons for additional visits.
“The American Institute of Massage provides a fun social experience where caregivers can network and build relationships.” said Sachs. “Hopefully those who participated walked away with a few phone numbers of others they can talk with and that means happier families and happier healthier kids.”
For more than 35 years Broward Children’s Center has been providing medical, educational, therapeutic and advocacy services to infants, children and young adults with special needs.
