Supporters and Community Raise $30K for Vulnerable South Florida Children with Special Needs

In a Year of Crisis, Supporters and Community Partners Raise $30K for Vulnerable South Florida Children With Special Needs

Pompano Beach, FL. (November 18, 2020) – Broward Children’s Center announced today that despite a trying year, the annual fundraiser, Miles for Smiles collected $30K to benefit children with special needs. The virtual event had approximately 101 participants and supporters which included 17 corporate sponsors.

Even though there have been financial challenges, the nonprofit has continued to serve over 1000 families in the community. This includes 55 residents ranging in age from infant to 46 years old who receive 24 hour nursing care at Children’s Comprehensive Care Center as well as the organization’s group homes.

Development Manager, Myrna Miott stated, “Because many of our supporters are experiencing financial hardship, there has been a shortfall of over $100K in donations compared to previous years.” Further, the charity has reported an increase in expenses of approximately $250/day for personal protective equipment.

The decision was made to host the event virtually after a consideration to cancel the event was discussed. In a typical year, the event would bring together approximately 500 people. Out of an abundance of caution, Broward Children’s Center planned a virtual Miles for Smiles instead.

Local corporations made it evident that their support would not waver and sponsored the virtual event with gifts of $5000, $3000, $1000 and $500 increments. Sponsors included Vertical Bridge Charitable Network, First Citizens Bank, Women With Options, John Knox Supporting Foundation, Addiction Recovery Legal Services, Ed Morse Automotive Group, Irwin Siegel Agency, Keefe McCullough, Resource Services, TGI Office Automation, Bateman, Gordon & Sands Inc., Broken Garage Door Sales, Fine Line Electric, Inc, iThink Financial, Joyful Medical Services, Stewart & Associates CPA’S PA and Wheelie Kleen, Inc.

Additionally, individuals were asked to participate from September 7 – November 7. Supporters responded, walked on their own and donated $10 or more to support and celebrate children with special needs.

A Zoom celebration call was held on November 9 where board members, sponsors and participants were acknowledged while the residents were celebrated. CEO and founder, Marge Evans was overwhelmed and expressed gratitude for the loyal supporters who didn’t let the harshness of this year stop them from bringing smiles to the medically fragile and all those who live with special needs.
